Eye Training for Screen Fatigue

Brainpro is an eye training app for iPhone. It runs four guided visual drills, smooth pursuit, gaze stabilization, saccades and peripheral vision, in a three minute daily session, and records how eye control changes from one session to the next.

A screen asks the eyes to do one thing for eight hours: hold a single distance, inside a narrow band, with almost no demand at the edge of the field. The tiredness at the end of the day is not the eyes being overworked. It is a very small part of what they can do being worked continuously while the rest goes unused.

What a screen day actually removes

What the eyes can doWhat a screen day asks for
Change focus between near and farOne fixed distance, all day
Follow moving targets smoothlyAlmost nothing moves
Jump accurately across a wide fieldSmall jumps inside a narrow band
Register movement at the edge of visionThe edge of the field is empty
Blink at a normal rateBlink rate drops sharply during focused screen work

The standard advice addresses one row of that table. Looking 20 feet away every 20 minutes changes focus distance, which is worth doing, and leaves the other four untouched. That is why people who follow it carefully still finish the day with tired eyes.

Three minutes that move the eyes through the ranges a screen never asks for.

Why the end of the day feels different

Peripheral awareness narrows over a long day at a screen, and focus switching between depths becomes slower and stiffer. Neither is damage and both recover, but they recover with movement, not with rest alone. Closing the laptop returns the eyes to a resting state without ever asking them to do the things they have not done since morning.

What the drills do differently

Smooth pursuit puts a moving target in front of the eyes, which a screen almost never does. Saccades widen the jump range beyond the width of a document. Gaze stabilization asks the eyes to hold a point while the head moves, which sitting still removes entirely. Peripheral work puts something back at the edge of the field.

The point is not that any one of these is a cure for tired eyes. It is that they are the specific things a screen day removes, and putting them back is a more direct answer than another break.

When to run the session

Mid-afternoon works better than the end of the day, because the aim is to interrupt the pattern rather than to recover from it after the fact. A session first thing also works well for people who start on a screen and stay there.

When this is not the right answer

Persistent headaches, double vision, a change in vision, or symptoms that keep getting worse are reasons to see a qualified eye care professional, not reasons to train harder. Brainpro is a training app for visual performance. It does not diagnose or treat anything, and it is not a substitute for an eye exam.

Questions people ask

What is the 20-20-20 rule?

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It is a reasonable prompt to change focus distance and it is worth doing. It is a break, not training, and it does not build the movements a screen leaves unused.

Do blue light glasses help with screen fatigue?

The evidence for blue light filtering reducing eye strain is weak. Most of what people call screen fatigue comes from a fixed focus distance, a reduced blink rate and a narrow range of eye movement, none of which a lens changes.

How long does it take to feel a difference?

The end-of-day difference is usually the first thing people notice, generally within the first couple of weeks of daily sessions.

Is screen fatigue damaging my eyes?

Screen fatigue is a fatigue pattern rather than damage. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or come with headaches or vision changes, see a qualified eye care professional. Brainpro is a training app and does not diagnose or treat anything.
