Smooth Pursuit: Training the Eyes to Follow

Smooth pursuit is the movement the eyes use to follow something that is moving steadily. It is the only eye movement that can hold a moving target on the centre of vision continuously, and it is the one that decays first when it is not used.

What this drill trains

Watch someone track a slow-moving object and the eyes should glide. When pursuit is imprecise the glide breaks into a series of small catch-up jumps, and the brain receives the moving object as a sequence of stills rather than as continuous motion. Nothing about this is visible from the outside at normal speed, but it shows up as a half-beat delay in anything that requires reading a trajectory early.

Pursuit also has a speed ceiling that moves. Train it and the ceiling rises, so faster objects stay smooth for longer before the eyes start jumping. That ceiling is the reason the same drill run at a fixed speed stops producing change after a few weeks, and why progression matters more than repetition.

How to do the smooth pursuit exercise

  1. Hold a small target at arm's length, a pen tip or a fingertip, roughly level with your eyes.
  2. Keep your head completely still. Only the eyes move. Putting a hand on your chin makes head drift obvious.
  3. Move the target slowly and steadily from side to side across about 40 centimetres, taking two full seconds each way.
  4. Follow it with your eyes and try to keep it looking sharp for the whole sweep, not just at the ends.
  5. Run 30 seconds side to side, then 30 seconds up and down, then 30 seconds on a slow diagonal.
  6. Increase speed only when the sweep stays smooth end to end at the current one.

Signs it needs work

  • The target blurs briefly in the middle of the sweep, then snaps back into focus.
  • You feel the urge to move your head with the target.
  • One direction is noticeably harder than the other. Left-to-right and right-to-left are trained separately.
  • The end of the sweep is fine but the middle is not, which usually means the speed is above your current ceiling.

Who this matters most for

Anyone who has to read motion early: ball sports, driving, riding, and any game where a target crosses the screen. It is also the drill that changes fastest in people who spend most of the day at one fixed distance, because a screen gives pursuit almost nothing to do.

Questions people ask

How long before smooth pursuit improves?

The drill itself usually feels smoother within one to two weeks of daily practice. Changes outside the drill tend to show up as earlier reads on moving objects rather than as a general feeling.

Should my head move at all?

No. Head movement lets the neck do the work the eyes are supposed to be doing, and the drill stops training pursuit. Rest a hand on your chin if the head keeps drifting.

Why is one direction harder than the other?

Pursuit to the left and pursuit to the right are trained separately, so an asymmetry is common. Give the weaker direction extra time rather than avoiding it.
