Eye Training for Gamers

Brainpro is an eye training app for iPhone. It runs four guided visual drills, smooth pursuit, gaze stabilization, saccades and peripheral vision, in a three minute daily session, and records how eye control changes from one session to the next.

Aim gets trained constantly. The eye movements underneath aim get trained almost never, and they are upstream of everything a mouse does. A flick that lands late is often an eye that arrived late, and no amount of sensitivity tuning fixes that.

What a flick actually asks of the eyes

A target appears at the edge of the screen. Peripheral vision registers that something is there. The eyes jump to it, a saccade, and that jump has to land accurately first time because vision is briefly suppressed during it. The eyes then hold on the target while the hand catches up. If the target is moving, pursuit takes over and holds it while the crosshair settles.

Four separate movements, running in sequence, in under half a second. The mouse work everyone practices sits at the end of that chain. Training the chain and training the mouse are different jobs.

None of these are visible in a replay. They show up as the difference between a duel that felt clean and one that felt half a beat behind, with no obvious mechanical error to point at.

Why long sessions make it worse

A monitor is one fixed distance, occupying the centre of the visual field. Hours of it means the eyes hold a single depth, make small saccades inside a narrow band, and get almost no demand at the edge of the field. Peripheral awareness narrows, pursuit goes unused, and focus switching between depths becomes stiff. The narrowing is reversible and it responds quickly, but not to more screen time.

How to fit it around play

Run the session before you queue, not after. The drills are a warm-up for the movements the game is about to demand, and doing them cold at the end of a session measures fatigue rather than capability. Five days a week does more than two long sessions, because visual control responds to frequency.

What this does not do

It does not replace aim practice, it does not change your sensitivity, and it will not compensate for an unstable frame rate or a high-latency connection. It trains the eye movements that sit underneath aim. If those are already sharp, the gains are small. For most people who have spent years training the mouse and none training the eyes, they are not.

Questions people ask

Does eye training actually help aim?

Aim is a chain: register the target, jump the eyes to it, hold them there, move the hand to match. Eye training works on the first three. It does not replace aim practice, and an app that claims it does is overselling.

How long is a session?

About three minutes, which is short enough to run before a session without eating into play time.

Is this the same as an aim trainer?

No. An aim trainer practices the whole chain under game conditions, mouse included. Brainpro trains the eye movements underneath it. They work on different parts of the same problem.

Will it help with eye strain from long sessions?
