Peripheral Vision Training

Peripheral vision is everything registered outside the point you are looking at. It carries almost no detail and almost all of the early warning. It is also the first thing to narrow under stress, under fatigue, and under long hours at a fixed screen distance.

What this drill trains

The narrowing is not a change in the eye. It is a change in what gets attended to. Under pressure attention pulls toward the centre, and the edge of the field keeps arriving but stops being used. That is why the same person can have a wide field in a quiet room and a narrow one in a busy game.

Training works on the attention side rather than the optical side: holding a central fixation while deliberately reporting what is happening at the edge, until using the edge stops requiring a decision.

How to do the peripheral vision exercise

  1. Pick a fixation point at eye level, about arm's length away, and keep your eyes on it for the whole drill.
  2. Hold both hands out to the sides at shoulder height, just at the edge of where you can still detect them.
  3. Without moving your eyes, wiggle one finger on one hand and notice which hand it was.
  4. Alternate hands at random. The eyes never leave the fixation point.
  5. Move your hands slightly further back each time the detection stays easy.
  6. Run one minute horizontally, then repeat with the hands high and low rather than left and right.

Signs it needs work

  • The eyes flick toward the movement instead of staying on the fixation point.
  • The upper field is much weaker than the lower one, which is common and worth training directly.
  • Detection is fine when you know which side is coming and falls apart when it is random.
  • The field feels noticeably narrower at the end of a long screen day than at the start.

Questions people ask

Can peripheral vision actually be widened?

The optical field is fixed by anatomy. What changes with practice is how much of that field is attended to and used, which is what narrows under stress and fatigue in the first place.

Why does my peripheral vision feel worse in the evening?

Attention pulls toward the centre under fatigue, and a day spent at one fixed screen distance gives the edge of the field almost nothing to do. Both narrow what gets used rather than what arrives.

Do I need a partner for this drill?

No. Alternating your own hands at random works. A partner makes the timing less predictable, which is a useful progression once the drill is easy.
